Music Review Monday: Adorn by Miguel

Miguel (Miguel Jontel Pimental) is a budding R&B sensation who burst upon the music scene with an alternative hip appearance and seductive vocals as featured on J. Cole's "All I Want is You".

Since then, he has gained a wealth of fans with his hits, "Sure Thing", "Quickie", "Girl Like You", and "Adorn".

I've wanted to feature Miguel for quite some time. He gives me a modern Marvin Gaye feel and his sexiness is second to none. There is also a soulful component to his music and disposition which draws a mature audience (since I'm about 10 years his senior). I'd love to see him in concert and have a taste of those vocals live and intimately.

Enjoy his latest #1 hit - "Adorn".

Adorn sit's in the #1 position on this weeks Top 40 R&B Billboard hits and rightfully so.

My Week in Pictures: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Arabian Gulf

Hey lovelies,

I'm still rolling around the United Arab Emirates making it do whatever it's suppose to do. It's been quite a ride. Getting adjusted to a new culture 8000 miles away from home is "something else". As soon as I feel a bit settled, some OTHER thing happens. It's life I guess.

The Good

There are a wide variety of foods here. I've listed them under the good but it's about to be the bad if I don't start exercising soon.

The Bad

Last weekend in Dubai I had a car accident. It was a fender bender but it stung my back a bit. I was more pissed off because ......

Well, there doesn't seem to be a safety standard regarding driving. Safety seats aren't required, speeding is excessive, the men drive so aggressively, and it's just dangerous.

Financial gluttony. This is a $33,000 cell phone. Without education (which seems to be an OPTION here) the riches won't last forever. I need to school them on what happens when you let certain sects run your fortunes.

The Indifferent

My current work assignment is a bit outside of Abu Dhabi, so this is what I get to see on the highway.

But...this is the view from my workspace.

Until next time....

Oprah, Forbes, and Philanthropy

The iconic and legendary Oprah Winfrey along with billionaire philanthropists grace the cover of the 30th anniversary issue of Forbes 400.

During the summer of 2012, Winfrey, along with several other billionaires came together for the Forbes Summit on Philanthropy in New York City.

Philanthropy is act of giving, concern, and care regarding human welfare and advancement. Philanthropy is personal choice in which an individual or group of persons donate goods, services, or monies to institutions of their choice. Each of the individuals shown in the photo above have passions regarding the causes in which they give.

Many of the billionaires are dedicated to education, eradicating diseases in under privileged countries, visual arts, and child welfare.

Giving is a personal choice and is often private. Celebrities and the wealthy have often faced harsh criticism for not "giving enough". An outside person has no right to assert such an opinion regarding the finances of others. Many give and prefer not to make an announcement because such public proclamation is not necessary. The amount of time, energy, as well as financial support given by these individuals are assets to those in need.

Before making a statement of criticism, decide on what you can do locally, nationally, or globally.

Need a place to start;

In Atlanta, the Atlanta Diaper Relief Organization provides diapers to families in need.

In Abu Dhabi or Dubai, Rooftop Rhythms is collecting toiletries to donate to the many labor camps throughout the Emirate.

Be inspired; I am.

Georgetown Cupcake at Bethesda Row - Review

The rebirth and revolution of the cupcake lives on. Cupcakes were once a small, delicious, delight shared at children's parties and annual school bake offs. In recent years, the cupcake has revolutionized the once basic, homemade, treat.

Individuals and groups have taken this revolution by storm and birthing grandma's recipe to an explosive  nationwide phenomena. This is the short story behind Georgetown Cupcake (DC Cupcake from TLC).

Sisters Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne are the co-founders of Georgetown Cupcake, stars of the hit series DC Cupcakes on TLC, and best-selling authors of The Cupcake Diaries. Their new book, Sweet Celebrations will be released in October 2012.

During the summer, I visited my sister in DC. Of course, DC has gone through a huge gentrification and the city is now attractive and very cosmopolitan. With that and the influence of pop culture, I was motived to see and taste the buzz surrounding Georgetown Cupcake.

I visited the location that is situated in the beautiful Bethesda Row. Bethesda is a quaint yet posh city in Maryland just over the DC line.

The shop is just the cutest and receives a lot of foot traffic because of its location. On this evening, my sister and I couldn't decide on flavors, so we went with the familiar: Red Velvet and Cookies 'n Cream.

The cupcakes are exceptionally rich. I didn't expect the Cookies 'n Cream to have such a strong flavor. It was almost pungent. I don't want to say that in absolutes because I normally try things twice before making a final decision. I then had a taste of my sister's Red Velvet Cupcake and it was marvelous. The flavor was rich but not as strong as the Cookies 'n Cream.

Overall: B
Appearance: A-
Taste Overall: B-

I'm going to try them again when I come back to the states to get a final review. (or maybe I'm greedy - who knows)

Have you ever tried Georgetown Cupcakes?

Music Review Monday - New Edition's 30th Anniversary

Photo via Centric TV

It's hard to believe that almost 30 years ago, the iconic band, New Edition, hit the music scene with their budding voices, charm, and teenaged charisma. The original five, Ronnie, Bobby, Rickey, Mike, and Ralph woo'd teen girls with their 1983 hit "Candy Girl".

In 1983, I was beginning to learn cursive writing, multiplication, and sat in Mrs. Schribner's 3rd grade glass at Wilson Elementary. Though not a teenager, my heart throbbed for Ralph. After hearing "Candy Girl", I wanted to bypass 9, 10, 11, and 12 years of age and jump right to 13 so I could be Ralph's Candy Girl. All I needed was a flipped bang, side baby hair, tight jeans, and oxford shirt with a starched collar...and I was in. (Just pure delusions of grandeur) My love, admiration, and delusion of marriage with New Edition didn't stop after Candy Girl, the fantasies continued with "Cool it Now" and "Mr. Telephone Man".
By the release of "Cool it Now" the guys had spouted mustaches, their voices deepen, and girls across the world were in love. You too? Yes! I know. I mean, who didn't want to stand on the other side of a fence hoping that Ralph would come sing. You did. Me too. Because of this video, I had a pink sweatshirt and grey mini with a big bow just like that.... but no Ralph. (insert SIGH here)
I have followed New Edition for quite some time. I have gone to every concert in every city in which I have lived. I hope they will do a few overseas dates for their 30th anniversary. I really just need them to come to Dubai so we can reconnect (delusion) once again. It would take a week or better to properly pay homage to New Edition. I've barely mentioned the early years as they have had hit after hit collectively and individually. My NE (and individual) favorites are: Candy Girl, Count Me Out, and Poison. How long have you been a NE fan? What are your favorite songs? tags: "New Edition" "New Edition Anniversary Tour" "music" "new edition 30th anniversary"

Fall Fashions; What are you wearing?

Nothing signals fall like the closing of Fashion Week, Back to School, and Labor Day Celebrations. Fashion and bargainistas are scouring sale racks for apparel appropriate for next season as well blending summer pieces. Remaining stylish and season appropriate during transition can be accomplished with hints of season's prior and current trends.

Fashion experts from New York's Fashion Week state that every fashion savvy woman should keep her eye on granny chic, florals, mixed patterns, military gear, and shawls as the go-to pieces the trend setting threads.

Granny chic consists of flowing bottoms, feminine materials, lace, soft pieces, and a change in hemlines. Granny chic is heavily coupled with an 80s inspired glam shawl, opaque tights, and the return of a pointy shoe.

Casual days call for a fuss free spread of military inspired pieces which include camouflage, browns, olives, and pieces with studs.

It seems that Fall 2012 is a playground for fashion creativity which one can easily find tops, bottoms, and gems for individual fancy.

Hey loves

I am in a location that does not support Blogger/VPN. It has taken four days just to make this post. I should be back on schedule next week. In the meantime, check out my pics on Instagram.

My Week in Pictures

Good Morning Abu Dhabi

Outside the St. Regis Resort

In the UAE, Miss Wendy WILL look like a national.

Madinat Zayed Gold Souk

I found the cutest cupcake shop in the Central Souk.
I think I'm going to do an entire post on this place.
The place was too cute and smelled heavenly.

Oh Ikea, how I use to love thee.

Dear MUA, Tell me more about this place!

Starbucks brings me balance...and I needed it a few times this week.

I found a Mexican Restaurant called Cantina Laredo.
I love Tex-Mex and this place hits the spot.

....the madness. This week had a whirlwind of events; housing (again), time to move out the hotel, abaya shopping, social media stalker, SWF stalker.... LOL...It's funny but NOT.

I'll share bits and pieces on the next few posts.
